Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder for which no cure exists today. Rosacea patients have to keep their skin condition under control by the daily application of topical skin treatments. However, rosacea symptoms go up and down on a daily basis due to so-called trigger factors. Rosacea skin can be enhanced considerably by paying close attention to these rosacea triggers. Here are three factors that can have a major influence on the appearance of rosacea skin.
Food Many different food types can trigger a rosacea flare-up. Aged foods such as cheeses and wine have the highest potential of making rosacea symptoms worse. Aged foods contain large amounts of histamine, which can increase inflammatory reactions in the body. Certain foods, such as bananas and strawberries stimulate the body to produce more histamine, so these foods have an indirect effect on rosacea. In addition, certain food ingredients boost the body’s production of nitric oxide (NO), which dilates blood vessels. Foods that increase NO are foods that are high in the amino acid arginine (such as chocolate, soy and nuts) and foods preserved with nitrates (sausage and cured meats). Each rosacea patient has to understand their diet well in order to figure out what food ingredients are contributing to their rosacea flare-ups.
Stress Stress can have a major (negative) influence on our skin. Stress is often unavoidable and most people have a fair amount of stress in their lives. However, if stress is not kept under control and is allowed to rise continuously, our health will suffer due to the physiological changes in our body brought on by stress. It has been shown in mice that in response to sustained stress, the increased levels of stress hormones (glucocorticoids) in the blood over time resulted in a decline in the protective (barrier) function of the skin. The skin’s function is to regulate our temperature, water retention and to protect us from external microorganisms. When the barrier function of the skin gets compromised, skin conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and eczema can develop. When stress levels are elevated chronically, a further deterioration of the skin can result.
Ocular Rosacea It is estimated that 60% of all rosacea patients suffer from some degree of ocular rosacea. Symptoms of ocular rosacea include burning and itchy eyes, red or bloodshot eyes or the sensation of a foreign object in the eyes. These symptoms are not always obvious for everyone and ocular rosacea is therefore frequently under-diagnosed. However, if ocular rosacea is not caught in the early stages and is allowed to progress, patient’s vision may be negatively affected. People with rosacea who regularly wear contact lenses pose a higher risk for the negative effects of ocular rosacea than rosacea patients who don’t wear contacts. The reduced oxygen availability caused by contact lenses could speed up the development of ocular rosacea.
Keeping track of trigger factors in your diet and environment plays a major role in the appearance of your skin. Knowing what these rosacea trigger factors are in combination with the right rosacea treatment, will help in managing rosacea symptoms for years to come.

It’s 3:00 am, your sleep has been interrupted by something crawling on your face, legs, private parts-and you don’t know what to do. First you wonder if it’s your imagination, but then the crawling feelings are accompanied by a biting, stinging sensation–sometimes it seems to be from under your skin. You get out of bed, turn on a light and take a look to see what’s causing the problem. You see nothing. Hoping for relief you scratch it. Moments later, the biting returns and it’s relentless. The next day you may find a rash developing or what appears like bites on your skin.
The only evidence of something going on is that you might find a gritty sandy like substance-black specs-in your bedding or some strange fibers developing on your skin or or tiny sparkly specs of light reflecting sunlight on your arms.
In some cases, it looks like a mosquito bite or the beginnings of a zit but it never goes away. In fact it multiplies in a short period of time.
What’s causing the biting, rashes, lesions, and what do you do about it? First you try some over the counter remedy such as Benadryl or Gold Bond medicated powder and there’s no benefit. Then you go to your doctor expecting a prescription for a skin cream to quickly eliminate the problem. Your doctor examines you and can’t find anything wrong except that he accuses you of scratching your skin causing it to inflame. You might convince him to prescribe something like Quill or Elimite and it works for a few days and then it’s back to the hell of itching and biting. Finally your doctor may take a biopsy (plug sample) and you’re looking forward to finally identifying the culprit. The test comes back negative and eventually your doctor suggests to you that it’s Rosacea’s Red Face, in your imagination, stress, anxiety, general nervousness, or worse yet that you have acrophobia. This news is almost enough to give you an anxiety panic attack.
Actually, you’ve may have been invaded by one of several strains of skin parasites. While most skin parasites are harmless, there are some skin parasites such as Morgellons (of unknown origin), unknown to most doctors, that can make life a living hell.
Job, of the Old Testament in the Holy Bible, may very well have been the first human on record who suffered from these skin parasites which are in the form of collembola, skin mites, skin fungus, and or nematodes.
Some species of parasites that usually live outdoor on plants and animals can adapt to living both in human skin and bring protozoan, bacterium, and fungi organisms that live systemically (in the blood). Without guidance in an effective treatment the parasites can reside in one’s skin for years and make scabies (a form of mite) look like the common cold.
To further complicate life, this skin problem can be easily transmitted from animal or human to human by simple contact, i.e., beauty parlor, lying down on an infested couch or rug, trying on new clothing in a store that was tried on by someone who was infested….
My hell started from a cloud of dust that descended upon me after I pulled a strangulating vine from a tree in my back yard so the medical specialist I consulted couldn’t pull that acrophobia stuff on me. Early on I experimented with garlic. I tried other things like curry, but garlic was the ticket. I started with 30,000 mg. of garlic per day and ended up at around 240,000 mg. per day before I freed myself of the parasitic itchy bity symptoms. For me, garlic completely tamed down the symptoms of the itchy parasites to where I could be human. Of course I tried many different medications during this time and each time I went off garlic to see if the medication or remedy was working, it would flare up again because none were working. Eventually garlic lost its magic and it was back to itching hell.
Fortunately shortly thereafter, I discovered the value of the diet which is called the King Diet. It was the first hope I had in handling this scourge. In fact I’m convinced that no treatment will work without getting on the eating diet and staying on it. There are foods such as fruits and many carbohydrates that feed the parasites and foods that starve them. I started it as an elimination diet–ate only eggs initially and within a few days I was itch and bite free–it worked that fast for me. It took over ten years to discover all the nuances of the diet so I could enjoy foods like shrimp scampi, chicken in butter sauce…
It’s a three stage diet, the first of which is very strict. After symptoms disappear with stage I, one can advance to stage II within a week or so and eat more leniently. It didn’t take long to think I was cured, but every time I went off the diet for a week or so, the itching and biting returned. In time with certain medications, I could advance to Stage III of the diet and enjoy limited types of fruit, honey, chocolate cake…

On the other hand, there are certain motifs that appear to have a universal or widely shared meaning that crosses cultural boundaries – the fountain, with its life-giving water, is one example. Some would see these shared symbols as belonging to the store of images inherited by all of humankind and accessible through the ‘collective unconscious’, as the psychologist C. Enough shared images and symbols exist either within or across cultures to make possible the existence of a language of gardens – or rather many languages, in fact an almost infinite amount.

Rosacea is a incurable condition of the skin that is defined by a chronic redness of the face, affecting the nose, cheeks and forehead. Initially, rosacea exhibits frequent flushing or blushing of the face that becomes more permanent as rosacea progresses into a more chronic inflammation of the face. Later stages of rosacea are often accompanied by pastules (red bumps that resemble acne), papules (pus-filled bumps) and permanently dilated blood vessels that become visible through the skin (telangiectasias).
Rosacea is estimated to affect 45 million people worldwide and primarily affects fair-skinned people between the ages of 20 and 50. The condition is made worse by trigger factors such as heat, cold, sun exposure, stress and foods high in histamine. Many rosacea patients seek help when the condition has progressed to a later stage. Rosacea symptoms can be treated with topical rosacea treatments (over-the counter and by prescription) and by an oral regimen of antibiotics. Although symptoms can be kept under control for long periods of time, inflammation of the skin frequently flares up due to a variety of trigger factors.
A standard classification system of rosacea was established in 2002 and defines four subtypes of rosacea, which cover the various primary and secondary signs and symptoms of rosacea. Rosacea patients can have more than one subtype at any given time. In 2004, a standard grading system was added to the classification system. Symptoms are graded as mild, moderate or severe. The 4 subtypes of rosacea are:
Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: A chronic redness (erythema) of the face with the possibility of visible (enlarged) blood vessels near the surface of the skin (telangiectasias). Sometimes, telangiectasias are not visible due to the facial redness and become more visible when the redness of the face clears up. The presence of telangiectasias is not necessary for a diagnosis. Patients with this subtype often blush easily and frequently experience painful, itchy skin.
Papulopustular rosacea: This subtype often exists before a diagnosis of rosacea is made. It is characterized by permanent redness (erythema) with red bumps (papules), some of which are filled with pus (pustules). Burning and stinging sensations of the skin usually are present as well. The papules and pustules often retreat with the right treatment. This subtype resembles regular acne.
Phymatous rosacea: Commonly associated with an enlargement of the nose (rhinophyma). This sub-type is predominantly found in men. The main symptom of phymatous rosacea is thickening of the skin with unevenly shaped nodules and the associated enlarged nose, but the thickening of the skin can also affect the cheeks, chin, forehead, ears and eyelids. Telangiectasias may be present as well.
Ocular rosacea: Symptoms of ocular rosacea include a burning and itching sensation of the eyes. The eyes appear red and inflamed (with associated multiplication of small blood vessels) and patients often complain of a “foreign body” sensation in the eyes. Eyes can be dry and sensitive to light and some patients may experience blurred vision. Inflammation of the tear glands and eye lids are common. In some patients, corneal complications could result in loss of vision. Because of the seriousness of this rosacea sub-type, patients with ocular rosacea are encouraged to have their eyes checked regularly.
Because of the way in which rosacea develops, patients only seek help when their condition is in a later stage. While the symptoms can be controlled with the right treatment, the skin of these patients will have a significant number of telangiectasias (permanently dilated blood vessels) that leads to a residual redness. The rosacea classification and grading system allows more patients to receive the proper care quicker and will prevent the condition from becoming worse.
